Many fathers travel for work, and if you let it, travel can derail your efforts to get and stay fit and healthy.
There are a lot of factors working against traveling Fit Dads who want to stay fit: long plane rides where you’re stationary for hours, the often-worthless hotel “gyms,” eating out for every meal, not to mention how hard it is to find a decent meal at an airport.
I travel a lot for work, and while it’s certainly not easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle on the road, I have found some ways to make it easier.
Here are some tips for you road warrior fathers.
- Pack food to take with you on the plane. It’ll save you money and the effort of searching for healthy options at the airport. Pack fruits, veggies with peanut butter, seeds and nuts, and even sandwiches – like a peanut butter and banana sandwich – to take in your carry-on.If all else fails and you’re stuck looking for some grub in the airport, look for things like salads with grilled chicken, unsalted nuts and fruit in the airport shops, and also keep an eye out for GoPicnic. If you’re lucky enough to be in an airport that carries them, they are great healthy snacks for the Fit Dad on the go.
- Look for a local gym near your hotel.
Do your research ahead of your trip and find a gym near your hotel that will let you do either a free trial of their gym or purchase an inexpensive week-long pass.
Usually, local gyms can cut you a deal for a pass for $25 or so, which is completely worth it to work out at a legitimate gym. The hard part is not staying out so late that you skip the gym altogether…don’t let it happen!
- Find a way to make your hotel gym or room work. Every hotel I stay in, I always first go check out what they call their fitness center or gym. Some hotels do it better than others, but for the most part, they’re usually some hodgepodge of treadmills, some dumbbells, medicine balls and, if you’re lucky, an ancient cable machine thrown into a room that was once probably a janitor’s closet.Nevertheless, there are ways to get in decent workouts, you just have to be creative. Do more exercises with medicine balls. Catch up on your cardio. Or use it as a chance to blast away at your abs and core, since you don’t need a ton of equipment for those exercises.This hotel room workout from B.J. - Seek out healthy food options. You might have to go a bit further, but finding a healthy place to eat is crucial to maintaining your fitness goals when your traveling. But where to go? Luckily, other people have already done the hard work for you by compiling lists of the healthiest fast food restaurants.
And be mindful of even the higher-end restaurants. Just because you’re paying more for their food doesn’t mean it’s better for you.
