So much of being a Fit Dad is pushing yourself past barriers, whether they are physical or mental.
Sometimes, the roadblocks that spring up can knock us off our fitness journey if we don’t make a concerted effort to try harder, go longer, and get stronger.
This month’s Featured Fit Dad, Marcus, knows all about pushing past any barrier life throws at you. Whether it is the physical barrier of lifting a heavier weight or the emotional barrier of being away from his family while deployed oversees in the Army, Marcus has proven that a little grit and determination can go a long way towards remaining a healthy, fit, active guy and passing that mentality on to his children (Marcus has a 2-year-old daughter, and another child on the way!).
I mean, the dude ran 100 miles on a treadmill over the course of 23 days! Talk about some fortitude!
Here is Marcus’ story:
When did you first get into fitness?
I have always been into fitness. I was an athlete all through high school and continued to stay active in college with intramural sports. I became even more serious with my health and fitness level when I joined the Army in 2011 as an infantryman. If anyone knows the life of an infantryman, you need to be in shape for the long haul.
What activities do you do to keep fit and active?
I love to lift weights, play different sports. I also like to find challenging work outs that I see or someone challenges me with.
What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?
One of my favorite fitness memories was during my first deployment in Afghanistan. There was a 100-mile treadmill challenge. I was never big into running so I figured this was a great way to break past that barrier. I completed the challenge in 23 days and was recognized by my leadership for the hard work I had put in, because they all knew how much I hated running too.
What is your favorite workout?
When it comes to a favorite workout, I guess I don’t really have one specific one. I like anything that is going to challenge me and push me past my limits and make me a better person physically and mentally.
In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?
When it comes to my children and fitness. I want to teach them the benefits that living a healthy and fit lifestyle can bring them. Teach them the values that come along with it as well such as discipline and determination. Being able to set a goal and accomplish it, in and out of the gym. Being able to push past limitation becoming a stronger individual both physically and mentally.
What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?
I would tell them what I would tell any of my clients or anyone that asks me in the gym. Stay focused, and stay hungry. The dedication you show in the gym will show up at home as well. Not only will you be thanking you in the future, your family will be thankful of you for showing them how strong one can be. Every minute spent in the gym is just adding time to your life, and who doesn’t want that extra time to spend it with your family.
