This month’s Featured Fit Dad, Pablo, is a textbook case for the argument that finding what works for you when it comes to health and fitness is what matters most.
For some, it’s getting in the gym every day and slinging some iron. For others, it’s putting in the miles upon miles necessary to compete in marathons and triathlons. And still others, like Pablo, find at-home workout programs fit their style. No way is the “right” way.
After all, as Pablo details below, it’s about feeling better, looking better and being better, no matter if that’s in a gym, on a running trail, or in your basement at home. And you can be pretty darn inspiring to others no matter what, just like Pablo.
Here is Pablo’s story:
When did you first get into fitness?
My fitness journey has been quite the roller coaster. I have tried gym memberships. I’ve tried personal trainers. I’ve tried all kinds of fitness classes. I’ve tried fad diets. In the end, I would lose weight and then gain it back again. Nothing really stuck for me – until I tried Beachbody at-home workouts.

In November of 2011, I started Insanity. I was 283 lbs. and I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. My weight was affecting all areas of my life: my confidence, my marriage, my job, etc. My wife and I knew we wanted to start a family soon so that became my motivation. And after three 60-day rounds of Insanity, I had lost 77 pounds. At that point, I had finally found something that worked for me and was helping me to become healthier, happier and the dad I always wanted to be.
Kids certainly require energy and I wanted to be sure I was at my best to give my son my best when he was born. In October of 2013, my son was born and I’m so glad he got to meet a much healthier version of me!
What activities do you do to keep fit and active?
I do my at-home workouts daily (which include weight training and cardio) and I love to run! I have always wanted to be a runner and since my weight loss, I actually enjoy it a lot more now. To date, I’ve run several races, including a couple half marathons, with my personal best time at 1:48:00.
What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?
My favorite fitness achievement was running my first 5K. I was still very out of shape and overweight at the time but I challenged myself to do it. My goal was to never stop running until I crossed the finish line, and I was able to hit that goal and finish the race in 38:30.
It was truly mind over matter. One foot in front of the other. One step at a time. I had proven to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind to and that was the mental shift I needed to accomplish even more!
What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout to-date would have to be The Master’s Hammer & Chisel by Beachbody. It’s an at-home workout program that incorporates cardio, strength training, agility and balance – although Insanity is still my “soulmate workout” since it’s the one I started with. I like to mix things up and try several Beachbody workout programs. It keeps things interesting and keeps my body guessing!
In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?
I hope to teach my son that he can do whatever he puts his mind to if he wants it bad enough. I want to teach him to be a man of action – a person who does more doing and less talking about doing. I want him to learn to serve others by helping them be their best selves through encouragement and support, like I do as an online health and fitness Coach.
He already understands that I exercise and eat well to be healthy and that it’s important to us as a family. He even tries to do push-ups with me sometimes!
What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?
Your family needs you to be the leader of your home and that requires you to be healthy. Don’t think weight loss. Don’t think muscles – even though I know we all want abs and biceps. Who doesn’t right? THINK HEALTH. The rest will come with time.
Your family deserves you at your best. When you take of yourself, everyone benefits. So make the sacrifices you need to make to make it happen. Don’t make excuses. If I can do it, anyone can!
