In recent years, my kids and I have enjoyed watching American Ninja Warrior on TV. We love cheering on the athletes as they perform incredible displays of athleticism and strength. My kids cheer and clap for each contestant, and they get so excited when someone finishes the course.
For this month’s Featured Fit Dad, Benoit, this is a life he lives everyday in his own backyard. An avid obstacle course and ninja warrior athlete, Benoit has built courses and obstacles in his own yard that he and his three children – Anna, Sebastian, and Gabriel – can use to not only get in a workout, but literally hang together as a family (see picture below).
Once again, being a fit, active, and involved father takes on a different medium, and Benoit has a great story to tell.
Here is Benoit’s story.
When did you first get into fitness?
Fitness is a way of life for me: playing sports, hiking, walking, lifting weights, calisthenics… I am always trying to improve my fitness and stay active!
What activities do you do to keep fit and active?
Calisthenics, ninja warrior training, running, walking, hiking, trampoline, play sports with my kids or friends.
What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?
During my Army Basic Training we went through an obstacle course and I was one of the selected few to go through it as a team competition and we ended up winning!! After that I knew I wanted to do more obstacle training because it was so much fun and a great workout!
What is your favorite workout?
I love pull-ups and last year I was able to build my own outdoor bar so I can do them all the time. I am always challenging myself into more difficult exercise on the bar, it is such a simple tool with endless variations!
In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?
I build my own obstacles and gym equipment so my kids like the try what I create. Since I workout at home, they often see me and want to try some exercises as well, they also love going on our trampoline with me; which I love to do as much as possible!
What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?
Set some goals about fitness, start with easy ones and build on them , reaching higher as you go. Find an activity you enjoy and look for ways to improve on it, learn from others as well. Don’t be afraid to be different, be bold and creative, never stop!
