Meet the first Featured Fit Dad of 2017, Blake. A father of three (Kinslee, 10; Kennedy, 6; and Bryson, 4), Blake has an outlook on health and fitness that is one of positivity and encouragement.
Recently, Blake was chosen as a top-20 semifinalist for the Bodybuilding.com Spokemodel search, and I happen to believe that it not only was because he’s a fit dude who takes care of himself from a health and fitness perspective, but also because of his upbeat approach to sharing his fitness journey.
Here is Blake’s story:
When did you first get into fitness?
My two year “fitniversary” is this month (January). Actually, I was very active as a kid. Although I played little league baseball for a few years, I was mostly more into X Games style sports, like rollerblading and BMX. I wrestled in junior high, but wasn’t very good. But into high school, I was focused more on social life (and I don’t mean Facebook). It wasn’t until after my divorce that I began to focus on my health and fitness.
What activities do you do to keep fit and active?
Other than the typical gym routine, I have recently grown a passion for hiking! I’d love to go on a backpacking/hiking/camping trip. I love kayaking and whitewater rafting, horseback riding (not exactly fitness related, but it’ll give you a workout if you do it long enough), just about anything related to the outdoors. In 2017, I’ll be taking part in at least 2 or 3 OCRs (obstacle course races), which is another newly found interest!
What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?
In my previous life, I just remember having a blast on the wrestling mat. Yes, even though I wasn’t very good. I loved the competitive, one-on-one action, seeing who was better than the other without teammates being able to help you.
More recently, I entered into the 2017 Bodybuilding.com Spokesmodel Search, and was selected by their team as a semifinalist! I didn’t make it to the finals, but I am still shocked and humbled to have made it to the Top 20!
What is your favorite workout?
Shoulders. Easily, shoulders! My favorite exercise is barbell shrugs!
In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?
I want my children to live healthy lives, and being active is certainly a part of that. We love going to the park, riding bikes, going for walks. My oldest child is currently taking gymnastics. I will always encourage them to stay active and fit. Although I am certainly not extreme with it, I provide healthier options at meal time and for snacks.
What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?
You’ve heard it said, “When’s the best time to plant a tree?” The answer is, “Ten years ago.” When’s the next best time? Today! The same is true about your fitness journey. Yes, it would have been great to have started years ago, but don’t let yourself continue wishing the same thing years from now. It’s never too late to start. Start today. Stay committed. Be patient. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t immediately see results. Stick to a program. Take the “before” and “after” pics so you can monitor and appreciate the process.
